Mid-view and self-storing doors are the budget end and give ventilation without swapping panels. Full-view doors show off the entry door behind them and usually come with a screen panel you swap by season. Retractable-screen doors are the most convenient, and cost the most in the mainstream range.

What makes installation harder
- An out-of-square opening. Storm doors mount to the trim around the entry door. If that opening is out of square, the installer has to shim and adjust, which takes longer.
- Rot in the trim or jamb. The storm door needs something solid to screw into, so rotted trim has to be repaired first; see door frame repair.
- Hardware clashes. The storm door's handle must clear the entry door's handle and deadbolt. Check the depth before buying.
- Non-standard sizes. Most storm doors fit 32- or 36-inch entries. Anything else may need a custom door.
When a storm door is a bad idea
A full-glass storm door in strong afternoon sun can trap a lot of heat against the entry door behind it. Some entry-door manufacturers warn that this can warp doors or damage finishes, and some limit their warranties because of it. If your entry door faces south or west, check its warranty, and consider a storm door with a screen panel or vents for summer.
Is a storm door worth it?
It is worth it if you want ventilation without bugs, extra protection for an expensive or wooden entry door, or less draft through an older door. On a newer, well-sealed, insulated entry door the energy benefit is small, and the case is mostly airflow and protecting the finish.
