Slab or prehung?
A slab is just the door. It is cheaper to buy, but fitting it to an existing frame means trimming it to size and cutting hinge mortises and lock holes to line up with the old ones, which is careful, slow work. A prehung door arrives already hung in its own frame. It costs more but goes in square, and it is the right choice when the old frame is damaged, out of square or being replaced anyway. If the frame is sound and the door is a standard size, a slab can save money; if not, prehung usually saves time and frustration.
What drives the price
- The door. Hollow-core interior slabs are the cheapest; solid-core, solid wood, glass panels, and fiberglass or steel entry doors cost more.
- The opening. Replacing a door in an existing, standard-size opening is the cheapest case. Widening or moving an opening means framing and drywall work, and in a load-bearing wall a structural header.
- Trim and finishing. New casing, painting or staining, and hardware can add as much as the installation itself.
- Exterior details. Entry doors need flashing under the sill, careful sealing and a threshold set to the floor, which takes longer than an interior door.
- Damage found along the way. Rot in the jamb or sill is the most common surprise on exterior doors; see door frame repair.
Doing several doors at once
Doors are one of the jobs where quantity lowers the price per unit. Most of the time goes into setup, measuring, trips for materials and cleanup, so replacing three to five interior doors in one visit costs far less per door than doing them one at a time. Before you buy a door
- Measure the existing door: width, height and thickness. Standard interior doors are 1⅜ inches thick and exterior doors 1¾ inches.
- Note which way it swings. Stand where the door opens toward you: hinges on the left means a left-hand door, on the right a right-hand door.
- For a prehung door, measure the rough opening behind the trim, or have your installer do it.
- Check the wall thickness, so the new jamb matches your drywall or plaster.
- Send photos before you order. It is cheaper to catch a sizing problem before the door arrives.
Common questions
How long does it take to install a door?
A prehung interior door usually takes an installer two to three hours. A slab fitted to an existing frame can take longer because of the hinge and lock work. Exterior doors typically take half a day to a full day.
Is it cheaper to replace just the door or the door and frame?
Just the door, if the frame is sound and a standard size. If the frame is damaged, out of square or rotted, a prehung door with its own frame is usually cheaper overall.
Does door installation include trim and painting?
Not always. Check whether a quote includes new casing, caulking, painting and removal of the old door. Our fixed quotes spell out each of those.
