Sliding glass door repair cost

Repairing a sliding glass door costs $150–$800, and about $400 on average. The most common repair, replacing worn rollers, runs $75–$300, and fixing a damaged track $100–$350. A patio door that has become hard to slide almost always needs cleaning, new rollers or a track repair, and not a new door.

Why a sliding door gets hard to move

  • A dirty track. Grit, pet hair and old lubricant pack into the track and the rollers. Cleaning is always the first step.
  • Worn or seized rollers. The door rides on two roller assemblies at the bottom. When their bearings fail, the door grinds or drags on the track.
  • A damaged track. Years of worn rollers flatten or dent the raised rail. A stainless steel cap can be fitted over a worn rail instead of replacing the whole frame.
  • Rollers out of adjustment. Each roller has an adjusting screw; a door set too low drags, and one set unevenly will not latch.
  • A frame out of square. Settling can pinch the door. This is the rarest cause and the most expensive.

How rollers are replaced

  1. Back off the roller adjustment screws at the bottom edge of the door to retract the rollers.
  2. Remove the stop at the head of the frame, then lift the door up and swing the bottom out. A patio door panel is heavy, so this is a two-person lift.
  3. Lay the door flat, remove the old roller assemblies and match them; there are many types.
  4. Clean the track thoroughly and fit a track cap if the rail is worn.
  5. Fit the new rollers, rehang the door, and adjust both screws until the door runs level and the latch lines up.

Locks, handles and screens

A latch that no longer catches is often just the door sitting out of level, which the roller adjustment fixes. Worn handles and mortise locks are replaced as a set; take the old one to match the hole spacing. A sliding screen that jumps its track usually needs new wheels or a new frame, both inexpensive. For other door locks, see lock replacement cost.

Repair or replace the door?

Repair when the problem is rollers, track, hardware or weatherstripping. Consider replacement when the glass has fogged between the panes, which means the seal has failed, when the frame is rotted or bent, or when the door is single-glazed and drafty. Glass replacement is glazier's work. For drafts around doors, see door weatherstripping, and for new doors, door installation cost.

Common questions

Why is my sliding glass door so hard to open?

Dirt in the track and worn rollers account for most cases. Clean the track first; if the door still grinds or drags, the rollers need replacing.

Can I lubricate a sliding door track?

Clean it first, then use a silicone spray sparingly. Oil and grease collect grit and make the problem worse.

How long do sliding door rollers last?

Often ten years or more, less on a heavy door or a track that is rarely cleaned. Steel rollers generally outlast nylon ones.
