Deck railing replacement cost

Replacing deck railings costs $900–$1,800 for most decks, and about $1,100 on average. Wood railing runs roughly $20–$50 per linear foot, aluminum more, and cable the most. A loose railing is a safety problem before it is a cosmetic one, and many can be repaired at the posts without replacing the whole run.

Repair or replace?

Push on the top rail. If the whole railing moves, the problem is nearly always where the posts attach to the deck frame, and that can often be fixed without replacing the railing: posts are re-fastened with through-bolts or structural screws and solid blocking behind the rim board. Nails and a couple of lag screws into the rim alone are the usual reason a railing works loose.

Replace the railing when posts are rotted at the base, balusters are split or missing throughout, or the railing is too low or too open to meet current code.

Code basics for deck railings

  • When a railing is required. Model residential codes require a guard on any deck more than 30 inches above the ground.
  • Height. At least 36 inches on homes under the residential code; some jurisdictions require 42.
  • Openings. A 4-inch sphere must not pass between balusters or under the bottom rail.
  • Strength. The top rail has to resist a 200-pound load in any direction, which is what the post connection is really for.

Local codes vary, and stairs have their own rules; see deck stairs repair and stair railing installation cost.

Choosing a railing material

  • Pressure-treated wood. Cheapest, and easy to repair one piece at a time. Needs stain or paint to last.
  • Cedar or redwood. Better looking, and still needs finishing.
  • Aluminum. Low maintenance, slim, and sold as kits that install quickly.
  • Composite and vinyl. Low maintenance and matched to composite decking.
  • Cable. Keeps the view open. The most expensive, and it needs strong end posts to hold the cable tension.

Check the deck while you are there

A railing is only as sound as the frame it is bolted to. Before spending on new railings, check the rim board, the joists and the ledger where the deck meets the house. See deck repair cost and replacing deck boards, or our deck repair service.

Common questions

How do I fix a wobbly deck railing?

Tighten or replace the fasteners at the base of each post. Through-bolts with washers, or structural screws, plus blocking behind the rim board, stiffen most loose railings.

How high does a deck railing need to be?

At least 36 inches for most single-family homes, on decks more than 30 inches above the ground. Check with your local building department, because some require 42 inches.

Do I need a permit to replace deck railings?

It depends on the city. Like-for-like repairs often do not need one, while a full replacement sometimes does. We note it in the quote where a permit applies.
