Common problems and fixes
- Leaking joints and corners. The old sealant has failed. The joint is cleaned, dried and resealed with gutter sealant from the inside.
- Sagging. Hangers have pulled out or are spaced too far apart. New hidden hangers screwed into solid wood, every 2 to 3 feet, fix it.
- Standing water. The gutter has lost its slope. It should fall toward the downspout by roughly a quarter inch for every 10 feet.
- Overflowing in rain. Usually a clog at the downspout outlet, and sometimes too few downspouts for the roof area.
- Water behind the gutter. A missing drip edge or gutter apron lets water run down the fascia.
- Loose downspouts. Straps have failed, or the bottom elbow has been knocked off.
Check the fascia behind it
A gutter that keeps pulling away is often screwed into rotted wood. Hangers will not hold in soft fascia, so the board has to be replaced first. See soffit and fascia repair cost and wood rot repair.
Get the water away from the house
Repairing the gutter is half the job. Each downspout should discharge several feet from the foundation, with an extension or a splash block, and the ground should slope away from the house. Water dumped at the base of a wall is a common cause of damp basements and rotted sills.
Repair or replace?
Repair leaks, loose sections and single damaged lengths. Replace when seams are failing along the whole run, the gutters are rusted through or badly dented, or sections have been patched repeatedly. Sectional gutters have a joint every 10 feet or so; seamless gutters, formed on site, have joints only at the corners and far fewer places to leak.
Common questions
Can a handyman repair gutters?
Yes. Resealing, rehanging, adjusting slope and replacing sections and downspouts are routine repairs. Full seamless replacement is done by gutter companies with a forming machine.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Twice a year for most homes, in late spring and after the leaves fall, and more often under trees.
Why is my gutter leaking at the corner?
Corners are joints sealed with gutter sealant, which dries out and cracks over time. They are resealed from the inside once the gutter is clean and dry.
