Why vinyl fences are repaired differently
Vinyl fence parts are hollow extrusions that slot together, and each manufacturer's profiles are slightly different. A crack cannot be sanded and filled like wood; small cosmetic cracks can be filled, but the lasting fix is a replacement part. Rails often lock into routed holes in the posts, so a damaged post can mean releasing the panels on both sides of it.
Common problems and fixes
- Cracked or broken panels. Usually impact, from a mower, a ball or a car, and vinyl is more brittle in cold weather. The fix is a replacement picket, rail or panel.
- Rails popping out of posts. Wind and expansion can work rails loose. They can be re-seated and secured with screws or rail locks.
- Leaning posts. Vinyl posts are hollow sleeves, often set in concrete or slid over a buried post. A leaning one is reset or its footing replaced, the same as fence post repair on any fence.
- Sagging gates. Vinyl gates need a metal reinforcing frame inside the rails. Gates without one sag; a reinforcement kit or better-anchored hinges usually fix it.
- Green or black staining. Mildew, not damage. It washes off with a soft brush and a mild cleaner.
Moss and mildew on the coast
In the Lower Mainland's damp climate, vinyl fences on shady sides of a yard grow green algae and mildew quickly. It is a cleaning job, not damage: a soft brush with mild soapy water, or a vinyl cleaner, removes it. Avoid pressure-washing at close range, which can scratch the surface and make it stain faster.

Finding parts that match
- Look for a manufacturer name or stamp inside a post cap, on the underside of a rail, or inside a post.
- Measure the panel height, picket width and spacing, rail size, and the distance between posts.
- Photograph the post cap and the rail profile where it meets the post.
- Take the details to a fence supplier or the original installer. Many sell single panels and posts in common styles.
Colour is the other issue. White is easy to match, though new white can look brighter than a fence that has weathered for years. Tan, grey and textured finishes fade unevenly, so a replacement section may stand out for a season or two.
DIY or hire?

Can a cracked vinyl fence be repaired?
Small cosmetic cracks can be filled with a vinyl repair product, but the fill will show and will not restore strength. For a cracked rail, picket or panel, replacement is the lasting repair.
Can I buy a single vinyl fence panel?
Usually, for common styles and heights. Fence suppliers and many installers sell individual panels, rails, pickets and posts. Discontinued styles are the exception.
Why does my vinyl gate sag?
Most sagging vinyl gates lack a metal frame inside the rails, or have hinges that have loosened on the post. A gate reinforcement kit and properly anchored hinges usually solve it.
