Doors are a job where quantity lowers the price per door, because most of the time goes into setup, measuring and cleanup. Details: interior door replacement cost, exterior door installation cost, door frame repair and lock replacement cost.
How it works
- Send photos. Each door closed, the hinge side, the latch side, and any damage to the frame. For new doors, add the width, height and which way the door swings.
- Get a fixed written price the same business day. The scope is written out and the licensed, insured local company doing the work is named on the quote.
- Pick an appointment window. The crew photographs the work before and after.
- Approve the finished job, then pay the balance. If something unexpected turns up mid-job, work stops and you get the change in writing first.
Repair or replace?
Most door problems are loose hinges, a misaligned strike plate or a frame slightly out of square, and they are repairs, not replacements. We replace a door when it is cracked, warped or delaminating, or when the frame is rotted through. If the frame is sound, a new slab can often go into the existing frame; if it is not, a pre-hung door with its own frame is usually the better value. For simple fixes you can try first, see how to fix a door that won't latch and how to fix a squeaky door.
What we do not do
We do not service garage doors or openers, replace glass in patio doors, or cut new openings in load-bearing walls, which is structural work. Rekeying and repairing locks is locksmith work, which in BC requires a security worker licence; we fit new hardware. In a strata building, the suite entry door is usually fire-rated and often common property, so changes to it need the strata's approval first.
Where we work
We take jobs across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley: Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, New Westminster, Surrey, Delta and White Rock; North Vancouver and West Vancouver; Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody; and Langley, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Each page covers the local housing and which business licence a contractor needs there. Not sure you are covered? Check your postal code.
Common questions
Can you fix a door that sticks every winter?
Yes. On the coast, doors swell in the wet months. We tighten the hinges first, plane the edge only if it is still needed, and then seal the bare wood so it does not take on more water next winter.
Do I buy the door, or do you?
Either. We can supply it as part of the fixed price, or install one you have bought. Send the details before you order so we can check the size and swing.
Do you paint and trim the new door?
Casing, caulking and painting can be included. The written quote lists exactly what is and is not covered.
Is there a minimum job?
Yes, $500. One sticking door is usually below that, so bundle it with other repairs.
